Mamajuana - Caribbean Aphrodisiac Liqueur
Most blends of mamajuana are considered aphrodisiacs, although they are often used as general tonics, or for particular illnesses, including infections and cancers. The mix of herbs varies not only between different artisans, but for different occasions. The Don Ramon version of Mamajuan is a rum based beverage that contains a variety of herbs, including Chamomile, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Anamú, Brazilwood, Cat's Claw (Uña de Gato) and others. Odds are they aren't going to tip their cards with respect to the 'secret ingredient.' But a search of the web turned up a variety of other ingredients used in the drink. Other mamajuana concoctions are known to contain herbs like Bohuco, Brasil, Canelilla, Caro, Marabeli, Osua, Palo Indio, Palo de Maguey and Pega Palo, and Timacle. Chamomile is widely known as a mild, relaxing herb. Star Anise has a licorice flavor, and contains anti-viral compounds that may account for mamajuana's reputation as a potion for colds and flu. Of course, it could be the rum (which doesn't make the virus any less nasty, but does distract the sufferer). One Dominican website claims that the varieties of mamajuana that are produced especially for their aphrodisiac effects always contain Cat's Claw, or Una de Gato. Another source mentions sea turtle penis as a traditional ingredient when the desire is for mamajuana to increase desire. Not to worry, I don't think that the version sold in the US has any turtle penis. Brazilwood is a work-horse of South American herbal medicine, and a variety is also found in Asia that is used medicinally. While the uses of Brazilwood are too many to list here, it does contain a compound called Brazilin who's chemical activity looks a lot like Viagra. Increase the nitric oxide, shift the AMP/GMP levels, blood vessels open, the soldier salutes. Anamú or anamu is an herb widely used in South America (especially Paraguay) and the Caribbean. It has sedative and anti-anxiety properties that may contribute to an aphrodisiac effect, and is also an anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Bottom Line: I haven't tried mamajuana, but wouldn't be surprised if it really does contain something that adds some oomph. I'll be looking for it on Valentine's Day, and will get back after conducting rigorous tests. |
